Antlion

Palpares libelluloides

Description:

This is a large, dragon-fly look-alike, insect belonging to antlion family Myrmeleontidae, whose larvaes are well known as predator - digging a sand-pit trap and sitting in a small cavity on the bottom in ambush. This species is large, about 10 cm of body length, vertically striped black and orange-yellow with black curved antennae. Wings resemble those of dragonfly, but are opaque and mottled dark-brown (see pic N° 4 - sorry about the blur; but could not get one pic with wings open).

Habitat:

Seen in a dense mediterranean maquis shrubland, central parts of Pelješac peninsula in Dubrovnik riviera.
