Don't know if you get that species of Hawk moth in Kansas. May be another member of the Hawk Moth family.

Thanks dandoucette. Their website just calls them gorillas. I did find a reference to gorilla g. g. in a 2009 blog, so I presume the others are the same.

It could be a wild dianthus or silene.
