Beautiful. We have an overabundance of these, and are the most common ones for me to spot and photograph. I had no idea there was a purple hairstreak and can't thank you enough for your knowledge and ID help.
Thanks again gator. I did just that once I seen your ID suggestion as I wondered about the wings. Had the missing part been there, I most likely would have guessed it to be a hairstreak :) They are beautiful and I can see why they are one of your favorites.
Thanks Gerardo, that is it, and interesting to find out that some are edible. Hope to research the edible ones further, as these seem to be springing up all over my property the last few weeks. How cool would it be to be able to eat them.
Thank you gatorfellows! Unfortunately this is one I didn't see fly off. Had turned my head to see what was chirping over my head and when I turned back it was gone. I have seen and photographed the tiny hairstreaks, but had never seen one like this before, which is also quite a bit larger. I am going to have to keep my eyes open for another one, as now I want to see it with the wings open!
