Anomala sp.
According to Wikipedia, there are at least 1200 documented species of Anomala Beetles and that great number makes identification a difficult task. So, I have settled for Anomala sp., rather than risk getting the I.D. completely wrong. When I saw this beetle, It was upside-down on its back and seemed unable to right itself. I have seen similar situations like this many times and I think the problem is that the beetle, despite having very sharp feet, finds itself unable to get a grip of anything to use as leverage if it crash lands on a smooth, hard surface. So, as I usually do, I turned it over and managed to take some pictures before it flew off.
This beetle was spotted on a rock in our front yard.
