Aix sponsa
The male wood duck in his breeding plumage has striking colors and patterns. The female is grey to brownish-grey with some white markings and a large white eye-ring (pic 5).
Spotted at Lake Fenwick in western Washington state in an area of the lake that has a lot of lily pads and other aquatic vegetation. These ducks nest in tree cavities in wooded swamps, shallow lakes, and streams where there is a riparian forest.
