Contopus cooperi
This medium-sized tyrant flycatcher is easily identified by its vested look. Grey sides with a whitish stripe down the middle. Slight peak on the top back of the head. Sexes are similar.
Spotted in eastern Washington. Eastern slope of the Cascade Mountains in fire-damaged woods. Coniferous forest above 2000 ft. Perched on top of a tree looking for flying insects which it will take in mid-air rather than on the vegetation.
This is a long distant migrater that prefers to breed in the northern coniferous forest and winter in the tropics.
