Gray Hairstreak Butterfly

Strymon melinus

Description:

This small butterfly was resting after feeding on a Tall Verbena. It was late in the day and it opened its wings to sun. A nice treat since they usually feed with their wings closed. They move the wings back and forth making the eyespots on the rear attract attention and provide a bit of safety from predators.

Habitat:

Meadows and open areas.

Notes:

This small butterfly is often found feeding on flowers, like Verbena, with small multiple blooms.
