Orthetrum caledonicum
Also known as the Sky Blue Dragonfly, this was quite a handsome fellow. Very elusive, I watched him for a couple of days but was unable to get close as he kept flying away. He would fly around for very brief periods before returning to the same perch. About 5 cms in length with a long, slender body, blue abdomen and dark tip. When at rest, the wings were held out horizontally, but most often held below the body. The females are a brownish grey in colour. Native species.
On a fallen branch that had landed on the netting cover of a backyard swimming pool.
This guy had a companion, but of a different species - a Red Arrow Dragonfly (Rhodothemis lieftincki). http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/115... There was no aggression between the two, and they would often fly off and return together.
