Niobe Fritillary; Niobe

Argynnis niobe

Description:

Medium size butterfly. Very similar to the High Brown Fritillary (A. adippe) and the Dark Green Fritillary (A. aglaja), although niobe is usually slightly smaller. The undersides of each of the three species are different and more easily easily distinguishable than the uppersides. In the niobe underside, which is superficially similar to adippe, the veins are usually lined black. The upperside is more similar although thay can be distinguished clearly by the submarginal lunules 5 and 6. Flight is from May to August, size is 46–60 millimetres

Habitat:

Spotted at an oak forest. Reserva de la Biosfera del Real Sitio de San Ildefonso-El Espinar.
