Sphagnum capillifolium

Sphagnum capillifolium

Description:

Stem cortex cells without spiral fibrils; green in shaded conditions, reddish in more exposed. Stem leaf is provided first in the photos above followed by the branch leaf. This species takes on numerous variations, morphological differences, and sub-species, so it can be a tricky group to ID.

Habitat:

This is another species from the Shadow Lake Bog. It forms the dominant spreading sphagnum species in the forested section.

Notes:

I took a nice picture of this moss with Cantharellus tubaeformis... Thought it may catch your eye :) I have spent quite a bit of time surveying this bog taking many sample specimens representing numerous different micro-habitats. S. capillifolium seems to be a master of disguise. It can take on so many different colors and forms that its making field identification a daunting task. Does anyone have any experience with this species?
