Red-necked Wallaby

Macropus rufogrifeus

Description:

A medium sized marsupial (macropod), soft grizzled grey fur, belly fur lighter grey to white, reddish fur on rump and back of neck, varies in individuals and regions, white face markings, black nose and face markings, black paws, black tail tip, some also have white right at the tip over the black, feeds on grasses and shrubs.

Habitat:

Found throughout eastern Australia where grass is plentiful and tree and shrub cover affords them shelter.

Thank you for your kind comments on the wallabies everyone. The little one is permanently out of the pouch now - saw them this afternoon, mum also has new one in the pouch!

Wow! Thank you all! I didn't realise I had achieved SOTD! These little ones are special and it is a pleasure watching them grow. The little fellow in the pouch was getting close to not being allowed back in - a couple more months and mum would be pulling the 'drawstring' tight!

What a wonderful capture kd, and congratulations! A wallaby joey peeks out from its mother’s pouch in our Spotting of the Day.

Measuring less than an inch long at birth, newborn wallabies crawl into their mothers' pouches where they continue to develop for a couple of months. Once a joey leaves the pouch, it often jumps back in when it feels threatened.
