This snake is primarily terrestrial but may be found near or occasionally in water; often it occurs in meadows, forest clearings, and along the edges of thickets where it feeds mainly on slugs as well as worms, salamanders and frogs.
This Northwestern Garter Snake was basking in the sun near a bay shoreline, resting inches from a cliff. It effortlessly made a slithering climb up and down the cliff edge.
