Northwestern Garter Snake

Thamnophis ordinoides

Description:

The northwestern garter snake is small, with adults averaging around 36-53 cm (14-21 inches) in total length. Garter snakes color is a shade of greens, blacks or greys with Stripe colours of red, yellow, orange and cream.

Habitat:

This snake is primarily terrestrial but may be found near or occasionally in water; often it occurs in meadows, forest clearings, and along the edges of thickets where it feeds mainly on slugs as well as worms, salamanders and frogs.

Notes:

This Northwestern Garter Snake was basking in the sun near a bay shoreline,resting inches from a cliff. It effortlessly made a slithering climb up and down the cliff edge.
