Plumed Whistling Duck

Dendrocygna eytoni

Description:

A shy duck species; slender, chestnut colouring on chest, cap and wing shoulders, grey above, buff lower chest, grey underneath, bright orange eyes, white plumes of several feathers emerging from sides over rest of wing feathers and very visible when the bird is resting, pinkish leg colour, call is a high whistle often repeated and is what makes this bird recognisable even though it may not be seen.

Habitat:

Found throughout much of eastern and northern Australia and some inland regions, in small and large flocks near water with nearby grasslands.
