Congratulations Rik, your Mullein Moth caterpillar is our Spotting of the Day:

"A Mullein Moth caterpillar (Cucullia verbasci) munches on a buddleia leave in our Spotting of the Day! The mullein moth is a noctuid moth with a Palearctic distribution. While the adult moth is cryptically marked, its brightly colored, spotted caterpillars are its most visible life stage, and can often be found in gardens feeding on buddleia, figworts and mullein (Verbascum sp.). The caterpillars pupate underground inside a very tough cocoon, and may overwinter several times at this stage before the adult moth emerges. Several species of tachinid flies are endoparasitoids of Cucullia verbasci".
