Arctic Tern

Sterna paradisaea

Description:

Arctic terns are very agile fliers, able to make sharp turns in a second. They also have a method of hunting that is similar to the land-based kestrel; they hover above the water, and when a fish catches their eye, they dive. I have attempted to show off the tern's hovering abilities with this series!

Habitat:

Arctic terns are everywhere in Reykjavik, but I found these in Faxaflói Bay near Kopavogur.

Notes:

These pictures were really hard to get because my camera doesn't have a burst mode. So I watched this tern hunting for a while, learning when the best times to snap were.
