Cow-Parsnip

Heracleum lanatum

Description:

Large hairy perennial, stems single, leafy, hollow. Leaves are large and palmately lobed, base of leaf stalk conspicuously inflated and winged.

Habitat:

stream banks, moist slopes and clearings, common from sea level to subalpine elevations.

Notes:

Photo #3 was taken on August 20 at the same area but I included it with the July 23 photos so that you could see the seed pods and the flower in the same spotting for comparison. Contains furanocoumarins which can cause skin damage in light-sensitive individuals. Known as Indian celery, all the Coast First Nations groups used it as a green vegetable.
