Striped Hermit Crab

Clibanarius vittatus

Description:

Hermit crabs with striped legs living in mollusk shells.

Habitat:

Found along a seawall adjacent to shallow water.

Notes:

A large number of these crabs had gathered in this location in the early morning. They began to disburse as I watched. Most were in Banded Tulip Shells, Cinctura lilium. The two larger shells in the second photo. The smaller shell in the second photo is a Crown Conch, Melongena corona. Both species of mollusks are abundant.
