Red-headed woodpecker

Melanerpes erythrocephalus

Description:

I think this is a beautiful woodpecker. Just love the all-red head. Has a solid black back. White rump, chest and belly. Large white patches on wings flash when in flight. Black tail. Gray legs. Gray bill. Female same as male.

Habitat:

This woodpecker was spotted in the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area, Pearl River, Louisana. Woodpeckers are my favorite bird and enjoy spotting them and taking their picture.

Thanks for the comments. This is only the second time I've seen this lovely woodpecker. I live in Maryland and have never seen one there. They fly by so quickly, all you see is a flash of black and white.
