Polistes sp
A number of wasps were working this nest. Paper wasps gather fibers from dead wood and plant stems, which they mix with saliva, and use to construct water-resistant nests made of gray or brown papery material.
This nest was in a tree on the Bittern Marsh Trail in Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area.
Yellowjackets and paper wasps are beneficial insects. They feed their young numerous insects that ordinarily damage shade trees and crops. They also kill countless houseflies and blow flies.
