I think your right about the profile gauge but had to edit this spotting because I'm not sure where I took these picks. At someones house in my neighborhood.

I see the males flying around my yard so often I recognize the way they fly.

Hi Tom,
the Velvet Ant looks great. I think the females are easier to spot than the males (at least, it seems like that, here in the Philippines). So, I have very rarely seen males of our local species.
I think the metal object is a profile guage.
