Ceryle alcyon
The belted kingfisher is an enjoyable bird to watch. He perches on a branch near the water, then dives headfirst for a small fish and returns to his perch to eat. He is a blue bird with white belly. Blue gray breast with a ragged crest that is raised and lowered at will. A long thick black bill. Small white spot in front of red brown eyes. Female same but with rusty breast band in addition to blue gray band, and rusty flanks.
This belted kingfisher was spotted in the marshes of Buccaneer State Park in Waveland, Mississippi.
