Belted kingfisher

Description:

The belted kingfisher is an enjoyable bird to watch. He perches on a branch near the water, then dives headfirst for a small fish and returns to his perch to eat. He is a blue bird with white belly. Blue gray breast with a ragged crest that is raised and lowered at will. A long thick black bill. Small white spot in front of red brown eyes. Female same but with rusty breast band in addition to blue gray band, and rusty flanks.

Habitat:

This belted kingfisher was spotted in the marshes of Buccaneer State Park in Waveland, Mississippi.
