Tower Case Moth

Lepidoscia arctiella

Description:

This case moth shelter was about 25 mm long. It was made of small sticks of the same length arranged parallel to the axis but in a spiral. The upper layers were wider than ones at the free end indicative of the fact that although the length of the sticks remain constant, the number of pieces added is greater towards the head end of the caterpillar.

Habitat:

Spotted on an old eucalyptus tree stump.

Notes:

Family: Psychidae
Subfamily: Teloporiinae
Case moths in this subfamily are said to be the most primitive of psychids.
