American Goldfinch

Carduelis tristis

Description:

The breeding male of this small bird is bright yellow with a black cap and wings, which have white bars. They also have a black cap on their heads and orange bills. The males in winter and females tend towards an olive green/yellow as this bird demonstrates.

Habitat:

Grasslands and savanna.

Notes:

These small birds are seed-eaters. While many species of seed-eaters tend to feed their chicks insects the American goldfinch tends to feed their young seeds. As a result, they are one of our area's latest breeders to take advantage of seed production that generally peaks in later summer.
