Erinnyis lassauxii
The adult forewings are dark brown with gray streaks along the inner margin, and a gray patch at the apex. The hindwings are dark brown with varying amounts of dark orange basally. The abdomen is marked with conspicuous black and white transverse bands. The larva are mature caterpillars with dark green body, two whitish dorsal rings behind the head and whitish dorsal strip along distal two-thirds of the abdomen. The apical horn is thin, grayish, with bent tip.
Their range involves AZ, TX, FL / W. Indies / Mex. to Argentina. They are in flight from July to Dec. The larvae feed on Papaya (Carica papaya), Manihot esculenta in the spurge family [Euphorbiaceae], and various plants in the milkweed family [Asclepiadaceae]. While the adults feed on flower nectar.
Found outside tonight at desk window. About 2 1/2 inches long.
