Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo

Calyptorhynchus funereus

Description:

Larger than the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, these birds are probably half as big again. This was one of a pair that were gradually working their way from tree to tree in the woodland I was walking through, but they were always just a little ahead of me,and never ideally placed for me to get a good photo. This one is good enough for an ident though.

Habitat:

This pair were moving through some woodland as I described above, but the woodland is a small pocket next to a railway line, and between a residential area, a factory, and the sea. It is at the southern end of the Royal National Park that extends most of the way from Sydney down to Wollongong, and I think these birds fly quite a distance, so I doubt that this particular area is their home - I've worked there 18 months and never seen them there before, but I have seen them around the National Park area and flying over the freeway.
