Woodland Kingfisher

Halcyan senegalensis

Description:

23cm long, brilliantly colourful bird especially in flight, turquoise, white and black with a strong red bill. The territorial song is loud and distinctive and much repeated during the breeding season, accompanied by much wing flapping displays while perched.

Habitat:

In large trees in the garden, although this species is common in tall riparian woodland it is not confined to riversides, my garden is 12 km from the river. The regional vegetation is tree savannah and mixed Acacia scrub experiencing hot wet summers (annual rainfall av. 450mm) and dry cool winters

Notes:

Like many Kingfisher species, the Woodland kingfisher eats predominantly insects
