Polistes humilis
I have seen these in more northern (warmer) parts of Australia but never in Victoria. Approximately golf ball size spherical enclosure around a cluster of staggered, hexagonal cells.
Inside a brick building (near external vent) in an established nature reserve.
Great design. If those cells had an LED in each it would make a perfect light shade.
I am yet unable to find an image of the cells enclosed within a perfect paper sphere. Another spotting of mine has the cells alone - did the sphere get wiped out or is this a different species??
