Great Spangled Fritillary

Speyeria cybele

Description:

A multi-colored Butterfly

Habitat:

On wildflowers growing in a large area of native prairie grasses, surrounded by woodlands, lake and creek

Notes:

I usually don't photograph many "damaged" butterflies but this one was just so accepting of my camera and presence, I couldn't resist. Even with torn wings, this butterfly could and eventually did fly away, off to the next tantalizing bloom

It could be a type of fritillary. Check for butterflies with this name, in your area :-)
