Shield-backed kelp crab

Pugettia producta

Description:

Aka as the northern kelp crab. This one had a brown color, which can vary slightly depending on its diet. The carapace is shaped like a police officer's badge or shield - like the name suggest and about 8 cm across. I was fortunate to find this one having lunch in a somewhat clear tide pool. They are often found in surfgrass and kelp beds. Pugettia producta is primarily a nocturnal vegetarian.

Habitat:

Spotted in a tide pool at Tongue Point Marine Sanctuary.
