Menura novaehollandiae
Brown, dove grey, rust tinges, dark eye, long tail. Hard to see in the rainforest underbrush where it makes its home in the Blue Mtns of New South Wales. Photo 3 shows the length of the legs and tail the best - long!
This is probably a female because of the short tail. Lifer!

Thanks Desmond! I had already listened to that a few times but enjoyed it again. I especially like the chain saw. Really!!?? What a bird.
Did you know that they can make all different types of sounds?

Thanks kd!
You got some great photos in a beautiful part of the world.
So glad you got some shots. I'd love to visit the area :)
Thanks, Leanne. We had a great time watching them. Others were hurrying me up because we had gone down the Great Staircase and were hiking to the Ruined Castle and were going to run out of time. That is a great birding area around Katoomba!
Great find Kathleen. These birds are definately near the top of my wish list.
Yes, but just other bird song, not mechanical sounds, etc like in the David Attenborough video. It was January when we were there so not as much bird song as there would have been in their spring - November and December. But it was definitely very birdy!
Did you get to hear a lyre bird imitating?
Thanks, Hema. Unfortunately we did not see a male displaying! Next time!
great series!
I just love this video of the Superb Lyrebird's singing capabilities!!
