North American Raccoon

Procyon lotor

Description:

This racoon is also called ringtail because of the 5 to10 black bands on its tail. Has a black mask across its eyes. Has short legs, a pointed muzzle, and small erect ears. Is about 75 to 90 cm (30 to 36 inches) long, including the 25-cm (10-inch) tail. Weight is usually about 10 kg (22 pounds) or less.

Habitat:

It ranges from northern Canada and most of the United States southward into South America. I spotted 3 racoons around the outdoor bird feeding area at a nature center at Indiana Dunes State Park, Chesterton, Indiana.
