A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Columba livia
The rock pigeon is mostly dark grey, with light grey patches on the wings, belly and rump. A patch of purple and green glossy feathers ornate the neck and chest. The eyes are red. Wild populations show 2 black bars on each wing.
This is the most common pigeon in our cities worldwide. Originated from Europe, North Africa and Middle East, it was domesticated thousands of years ago. It was then spread around the world, escaping the human settlements and creating new feral groups. The wild and feral populations live in open space, where cliffs offer nesting opportunities. The city populations use the buildings as their own cliffs.
