A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Ardea cinerea
Large wading predatory bird from Heron family (Ardeidae).
This is a common resident bird throughout much of the Palearctic, even though some birds from Northern parts may migrate in winter. This is a bird of wetland areas, marshes, lakes and ponds, and is often found well camouflaged and motionless (like here) stalking prey and waiting it come within striking distance. Here, observed, in an artificial lake close to protected marshes in pays de Gex, France.
Fresh spoils from my participation in Wetland habitats bird count 2019, the week that just ended.
