American Coot

Fulica americana

Description:

Adults have a short, thick white bill with a reddish-brown spot at the top of the bill between their eyes. They have a gray/black body with a darker colored neck.

Habitat:

American Coots are found near water. They prefer freshwater environments, but may temporarily live in saltwater environments during the winter months. They are found throughout much of North and Central America.

Notes:

These guys have the most giant, awkward looking feet I have ever seen. It makes me laugh every time I see them out of the water walking around.
