Western Tarsier

Cephalopachus bancanus

Description:

Horsfield's tarsier (Cephalopachus bancanus) is a rarely photographed nocturnal primate. Very quiet and not moving to prevent detection when we saw it. Have big eyes that reflect lights. It jumped away after 1 minute to escape from our sight.

Habitat:

In trees beside the MBSC lake, isolated from the jungle.

Notes:

The rangers spotted this during our night walk activity. We were told that these are rarely seen outside of the dense jungle so we are extremely lucky to be able to see this species in the wild. They usually live deep inside the jungles of Maliau Basin but this one was found in the study centre where the trees it lives in are isolated from the jungle. Looking at these photographs made me wished that I had a better camera. >>>Map accuracy : 5km diameter.
