Twig Girdler

Oncideres cingulata

Description:

Medium-sized beetles banded with gray and brown. Males have longer antennae than females.

Habitat:

Found this pair on a stem of a shrub along a berm bordering floodplain. Vegetation was mostly scrub, grasses.

Notes:

Females of this species girdle twigs of live woody shrubs and trees, killing the wood beyond the scar. An egg is then laid in this dead wood and the larva that hatches bores within.
