Red-browed Finch

Neochmia temporalis

Description:

Small finch with short red beak, red flash above the eye, and also a red flash at the top of the tail mostly hidden by the wings (but quite vivid when in flight). The body is light grey, with olive green wings, and yellow legs.

Habitat:

South-East Australia. These were seen feeding on seed heads of tall weeds (picture 5) in the grassy wasteland between some woodland and a new housing estate. When I approached too close for them, the whole flock of 15-20 birds took off and circled round into a tree just behind me. They obviously felt safer there as they were not bothered by me taking photos from just a few yards away.
