Red-headed woodpecker juvenile

Melanerpes erythrocephalus

Description:

I was unable to identify this bird at first. Had never seen a brown/gray-headed woodpecker. But spotted it with its parent. Juveniles have very similar markings to the red-headed parent, but have an all greyish-brown head and a largely brown, grey and white body, with large white wing patches.

Habitat:

Fort Kearny State Recreation Area, Kearny Nebraska.
