Pepsis sp.
A black Tarantula Hawk Wasp about 3 cm long with bright red-orange wings with a metallic sheen. The antennae were black, as opposed to another black one seen in Chiapas, Mexico with yellow antennae (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/205...). It was deeply engrossed in feeding on small flower inflorescences. Family Pompilidae. The plant it was on is California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum foliolosum). See spotting (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/164...).
This plant was growing right on the rim of the Grand Canyon at Sunset (last picture), West Rim near the Sky Walk, Arizona.
