A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Eristalis tenax
medium sized, stocky bee mimic fly with 'marbled' eyes instead of bands. Has hovering displays and spawns in putrid water with decaying organinc matter where its well known 'rat tailed' maggots develop. Like a variety of drone flies in the Cape, they feed on flowers enjoying fennel and carrot the best.
Common site in flowering shrub and gardens with good cover
