Darth Maul Bug

Spilostethus hospes

Description:

The Darth Maul Bug, aka Large Milkweed Bug, is a member of the family Lygaeidae. The red and black patterns on the back is a warning to would-be predators that it is toxic. However, the patterns can be vary quite a bit in different individuals. My first encounter with this species of insect, and I think it's pretty cool. It has a really 'tribal' appearance.

Habitat:

This particular individual was spotted on a Wild Gooseberry plant (Physalis angulata) - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/187...
