Dorantes longtail

Urbanus dorantes

Description:

Mostly brown with a long narrow tails and a checkered fringe on the wings. The forewings have large bright yellowish-white markings that help differentiate it from other long-tailed skippers. The underside of hindwings have dark blotches and there is a pinkish sheen - I believe this is where it gets it's other common name: lilac-banded longtail. The wingspan is 37–51 mm.

Habitat:

Spotted nectaring on lantana at the National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas.
