Euploea tulliolus
The Small Brown Crow or Dwarf Crow (Euploea tulliolus) is a butterfly that belongs to the Crows and Tigers, that is, the Danaid group of the Brush-footed butterflies family. Due to the purple iridiscence of the butterfly under sunlight, the butterfly is also commonly referred to as the Purple Crow. The adult butterflies are brownish black, with white spots on the edge of the wings, which join together to form a white band near the tip of the forewing. The adult butterflies have a wing span around 6 cms.
Found on the Solomon Islands, Malaysia, Formosa and Australia,in particular, Brisbane bushland. They usually fly slow near the ground.
Thanks for all your ID help martin! It's good to see something so lovely come out of all that rain!
Nice... This is your local species. These are your reward for enduring all that rain. They have just emerged and are very fresh. You find aggregations of these under native shade trees.
Don't take my word on it as this refers to the butterflies of Singapore, but then of course that doesn't mean it is the only place they can be found.
The bigger one was about 7-8cm vertically from head to end of wings, and the other one was a little bit smaller
It's either a female Magpie Crow, a Striped Black Crow, a Striped Blue Crow, or a King Crow. How big was it?
