Great Cormorant

Phalacrocorax carbo

Description:

Large all black waterbird, some white on flanks, yellow face, long beak with sharp curved tip for hooking fish while bird swims underwater, tail short and often fanned out, bird is usually seen resting on logs or branches along water ways often with outstretched wings drying in the sun, call is a croaking sound. Adult size up to 92cm.

Habitat:

Found throughout much of Australia except very tip of Cape York Queensland & very arid inland of WA. This one on man made dam/town water supply below spillway.

Notes:

This fellow was not hanging around for a photo shoot.
