Hairy Woodpecker - male

Picoides villosus

Description:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hairy_woodp...

Habitat:

resident over most of North America

Notes:

I was drawn to the sound of this Hairy Woodpecker drumming on my new garden fence! He found it a great spot to sun, spreading his wings out one at a time to expose the lice (?), preen his feathers with his beak, and rest awhile. I was happy to have him spend some time in my garden but hope that he doesn't spend too much time poking at that new cedar fence....:)

Thanks, Marion! I had to take my feeders down last week as a bear was pushing down the pole and helping himself. Will leave them down now until colder weather comes and hopefully fewer bears!
Good luck at your feeders!
