Oxycanus dirempta

Oxycanus dirempta

Description:

About 60mm wingspan this moth has long but finely plumose antennae meaning it is a male in this family. White spots and smokey patterns on brown wings with typical hepialid wing shape and venation. Underneath of the wings and the abdomen showed a deep orange to paler yellow gradient.

Habitat:

Resting on a wall under strong night lighting at the local school.

Notes:

Oxycanus sp antennae need to be assessed with care as do the wing markings. Dennis Wilson has covered it well here http://peonyden.blogspot.com.au/2010/06/... and here are some examples of variability http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6aOnqfviqGI/Ue...
family: HEPIALIDAE
subfamily: Hepialidae
