Steller's Jay

Description:

Only crested jay west of the Rockies, the Steller's jay has a bright blue body and dark blue/black head. Variable over its range of western North America, it can have light blue eye brows, or be totally dark like this one. Member of the corvid family along with crows and ravens.

Habitat:

Loves our property and breeds here every year. Is seen over many types of habitat within its range, including forests, mountains, cities and rural areas.

Notes:

Named after the German naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller who first recorded seeing it in 1741. It is the provincial bird of British Columbia.
