Dryocopus pileatus
Very large bird approximately 20 inches in height. Dark veak with a black white and red body. Red top not with white face, bkack eye band. Black and white body and wings.
Moist everglades with numerous dead trees and palm trees.
I spotted these two individuals from a roadway next to a swamp area. Impossible to approach any closer for more detail. Just thought it was really unusual to see two together and unusual to catch one in preparation for flight. Not my best shots but here they are anyway.

Would be cool to find even a piece of evidence of an ivory.
It would be cool if somebody spotted an ivory-billed. They are thought to be extinct and they look very similar to pileated woodpeckers. In fact, I found this while looking for ivory-bill spottings.
...especially not lucky enough to see these wonderful endangered woodpeckers, huh???
Very nice! I visited the Everglades this week but wasn't lucky enough to see any woodpeckers.
