Dasypodia selenophora
A large and pretty looking Noctuid moth with beautiful blue eyes. :-) Approximately 4 inches across. This one is female.
Flew into our laundry from the back yard possibly to shelter from a terrible wind storm.
It seems very early in the season for this one. I was concerned at it's ability to survive the sudden cold snap here and then I remembered that they are also surviving on Macquarie Island which is not far from Antarctica. Somtimes called 'Southern Old Lady' and 'Moon moth' in NZ.

Maybe they display wisdom... acceptable it true.
I have wondered about that before!!
Hahaa! yes..why old ladies names?? :-D
Thanks Marta and Shanna - I wonder why so many of our big moths are named after old women; we have at least 2 Old Ladies and your Granny's Cloak is superb.
Gorgeous. You don't realise how colourful they are until you shoot them with a flash. Here's a stunning Granny's Cloak I saw a couple of weeks ago... http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/382...
Like the "blue eyes"!
Thanks Luis - I agree. It was nice to find a fresh golden one as they are often more dull grey.
This moth is great looking!
Love the eyes on this moth
