Cyana sp.
13mm moth pupa found on topside of a leaf in secondary Malaysia jungle. Pupa is surrounded by a cage of bristles (possibly remnants of the caterpillar?) Awesome! Pupa is suspended inside this cage of bristles like a hammock by strands of silky strings.
secondary jungle. Malaysia low lying shrubs

Terrific spotting!
Hi Lauren,
your description of a "basket" helped me narrow down my search on Google.
Finally found the name for this beauty:
It's a moth from the Arctiinae subfamily, from the cyana sp.
thanks so much!!
Hi Lauren!
Awesome pics you have!
I found this youtube of a tussock moth recycling its bristles into a similar but denser basket.

Hi FakawiTribe, I found something similar to yours in Mexico, the basket is somewhat different, but the pupa is similar. A Geometrid moth had just emerged. (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/860...).
i know of certain tussock moths using their urticating bristles to build a cocoon this way.
This could possibly be a moth pupa.
ID, anyone?
